Why would a woodpecker peck at metal?

The metal cap to our chimney, day after day, week after week. It will spend an hour or two a day, sometimes several occasions, pecking at the metal cap. It pecks about every minute or 2. It makes a loud noise. There are plenty of trees around other woodpeckers peck at for bugs, why would it waste its time on metal?
